Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) is the nodal centre of the country for Olympiad programmes in mathematics and sciences including astronomy. The programmes aim at promoting excellence in science and mathematics among pre - university students.

From the Olympiad year beginning August 2008, a new integrated National Steering Committee for science and astronomy Olympiads has been overseeing the entire activity in these subjects. The subject includes physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy, and junior science.

The programme is financially supported by Government of India, in particular, by Board of Nuclear Sciences (Department of Atomic Energy), Department of Science and Technology, Department of Space and Ministry of Human Resource Development.

The Mathematics Olympiad is conducted under the aegis of the National Board of Higher Mathematics (NBHM).

The following are the International Olympiads

  • International Physics Olympiad (IPhO)
  • International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO)
  • International Biology Olympiad (IBO)
  • International Olympiad in Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA)
  • International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO)
  • International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO)

The Olympiad programmes in physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy (junior and senior level) and junior science are a five stage process for each subject separately. The first stage for each subject is organized by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT). All the remaining stages are organized by Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE).

  1. National Standard Examination in Physics / Chemistry / Biology / Astronomy (NSE P/C/B/A)
  2. Indian National Physics / Chemistry / Biology / Astronomy Olympiad
    (IN PhO/ChO/BhO/AO)
  3. Orientations cum Selection Camp (OCSC)
  4. Pre Departure Training Camp (PDT)
  5. International Physics / Chemistry / Biology / Astronomy Olympiad (IPhO/IChO/IBO/IOA)

Stages of the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)

  1. Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO)
  2. Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO)
  3. International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (IMOTC)
  4. Pre-departure Training Camp for IMO
  5. International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)

HBCSE offers no career incentives (admissions or scholarships) to Olympiad students. HBCSE views the Olympiads mainly as a promotional programme to encourage students towards basic sciences by providing them with challenging academic opportunities. However, some special merit awards, in the form of books, etc. are given to students in appreciation of merit at the end of the training camps in different subjects of science.
